Biography

Jonah Nung is a music director and pianist based in Toronto, Canada. His passion for musical theatre stems from its collaborative nature and ability to amplify marginalized voices. He is especially drawn to new musicals and is grateful to have worked on shows by young Canadian writers including Shreya Jha, Nam Nguyen, Wilfred Moeschter, and Cesari & Chan.

Jonah loves exploring and contributing to different branches of the music department, having worked as a music director, pit musician, keyboard programmer, and copyist. His recent credits include Falsettos (Keyboard Programmer/Synthesizer, Bowtie Productions), Ordinary Days (Music Director, Shifting Ground Collective), and A Perfect Bowl of Pho (Music Director, Send Noods Productions). As a pianist, he frequently accompanies in concerts and cabarets, with previous collaborators including Britta Johnson, Measha Brueggergosman-Lee, and Hungover Cabaret.

Outside of performance, Jonah has composed for theatre and film, including Mashreka Mahmood’s original musical WANT (Victoria College Drama Society) and Sammi Zhang’s animated short film Long Distance, which was featured on CBC’s Absolutely Canadian (S21E33).

Jonah is a graduate of the University of Toronto, where he obtained a Bachelor of Music in Music Education with a minor in composition. While pursuing his degree, he studied piano with Steven Philcox, composition with James Rolfe, and orchestral and choral conducting with Gillian MacKay, Ivars Taurins, and Kathleen Allan.
