Biography
Jay Teamer (he/him/his) is an active music director, conductor, vocal coach, collaborative pianist, singer, and church musician based in Buffalo, NY. He is an energetic educator who believes in creating opportunities for artists to grow in their artistic identities. He is passionate about fostering a love for music in people of all ages through the pillars of creativity, exploration, connection, and collaboration. Currently, he serves as a Lecturer of Musical Theatre in the Department of Theatre and Dance (TADA) at The State University of New York at Fredonia (SUNY Fredonia). In TADA, he teaches Singing for the Actor, Introduction to Musical Theatre, and Introduction to Performing Arts. He also serves as the department’s pianist, vocal coach, and music director for their musical theatre productions and upper-level performance workshop courses.
Teamer holds an M.M. in Vocal Coaching from Oklahoma City University (OCU) and a B.M. in Music Education from Stephen F. Austin State University (SFA). While at OCU, he was an active collaborator in voice lessons and juries, musical theatre classes, masterclasses, and university-sponsored events. He was the conductor of the university’s Chapel Choir in the Fall of 2024 and a long-term substitute choir director of Casady School’s choirs in the Spring of 2025. He also held the Pianist/Organist position at Wesley United Methodist Church in Oklahoma City, OK, in 2023-2025. During his studies at SFA, he performed as a member of the A Cappella Choir, Chamber Singers, Opera Theater, and sang with the First United Methodist Church of Nacogdoches’ Chancel Choir. He was also a collaborative pianist for the choir programs of Nacogdoches Independent School District from 2020-2023. Outside of his musical activities, Teamer was heavily involved at SFA as a Jack Walker (campus tour guide), orientation leader, campus content creator, and many other parts of student affairs. Before his collegiate studies, he was an active performer in band, choir, theatre, and speech, and played a special role in community engagement through the performing arts.
As a rising music director, Teamer has credits in multiple parts of the country. Most recently, he music directed Spamalot at Ozark Actors Theatre in Rolla, MO, and Once on This Island at The Winnipesaukee Playhouse in Meredith, NH. Additionally, he frequently returns to Aspire Music Academy in Woodbury, MN, as a counselor for their Summer Stock program. In February 2026, he will be the Music Director for SUNY Fredonia’s production of Ruthless!, and in April 2026, he will be the Music Director for the Regional Premiere of Finn Anderson’s Islanderat Irish Classical Theatre Company. His educational music direction credits include: You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown and [title of show](Stephen F. Austin State University); Baby and 35MM: A Musical Exhibition (Oklahoma City University). His community theatre music direction credits include: Alice by Heart and Les Misérables: School Edition (Kismet Arts Studio and Theatre); Sweeney Todd: School Edition and Elf, Jr. (Spotlight Acting Academy); 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (Studio B Performing Arts); and more. Finally, he served as an Assistant Music Director in Sweeney Todd, Anything Goes, The Merry Wives of Windsor, and The Ballad of Baby Doe(Oklahoma City University).
His mentors include Professor Jan McDaniel, Dr. David Herendeen, Dr. Deborah Dalton, Dr. Michael Murphy, Dr. Claire Murphy, Dr. Tod Fish, and Ms. Lori Sager. He holds professional affiliations with Pi Kappa Lambda (PKL), Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA), International Keyboard Collaborative Arts Society (IKCAS), Texas Choral Directors Association (TCDA), and American Choral Directors Association (ACDA).
