Biography

Native of Taiwan, Chia-Lin Yu is a passionate percussionist and music educator currently based in NYC. Her versatility has seen her performing as a soloist, chamber musician, orchestral player, and pit musician across various countries, including Austria, the United States, Japan, Taiwan, and Italy.

Chia-Lin performed with the Transport Group in one of the Anne L. Bernstein Concert series, Rodgers & Hammerstein: A Broadway Celebration, sharing the stage with a cast of Broadway stars. She has served as the timpanist and percussionist in several opera productions, including The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs, L’elisir d’amore, La Traviata, Le Nozze di Figaro, Ariadne auf Naxos, and Così fan tutte. Additionally, she has performed with numerous orchestras, most recently as a guest percussionist with the Kaohsiung Symphony Orchestra from 2022-2023.

This year, Chia-Lin performed in the world premiere of The Jump Up!, a new work by Douglas J. Cuomo, with Sandbox Percussion. In 2019, Chia-Lin performed in the Holiday Celebration, a concert featuring a Big Band and studio orchestra, sharing the stage with Steve Houghton, Steve Allee, Jeremy Allen, Daniel Perantoni, Sylvia McNair, and many more amazing musicians. She was selected to perform with the IU Percussion Ensemble in the PASIC 2018 ensemble showcase. Additionally, she contributed to Grammy-winning drummer Glenn Kotche’s composition album, Sticks, Skins, Metal and Stone.

As a soloist, Chia-Lin has performed several concerti with orchestras and ensembles from Japan, Taiwan, and the United States. In 2022, she held a percussion recital at the DiMenna Center. Chia-Lin excels in conveying subtle emotions and telling stories through her music, creating an immersive atmosphere that captivates the audience.

Chia-Lin earned her master’s degree and performer diploma in percussion performance from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. In addition to performing, she enjoys composing music and creating arrangements.
