Malachi Brown

Malachi Brown

Biography

Malachi Brown (he/him) is a cellist and composer born and raised in Norfolk, Virginia. He has studied music composition and cello performance at Old Dominion University and Ithaca College. He is an advocate for collaboration between art mediums and is always eager to tackle a new project if it means adding his own touch. Malachi has composed for the concert stage, animation, and film thus far in his career. He incorporates many combinations of styles in his music but is always rooted in a type of neo-romantic sound. “My goal is to write exactly what I hear in my head, and it’s quite a journey every time.”
In 2023, Malachi has performed with the likes of Toshi Reagon, Sigur Ros, and Ellie Goulding as well as musical activist organizations such as Sound-Off: Music for Bail, and Protestra. He received his Lincoln Center debut performing alongside Toshi Reagon in the acclaimed rock-opera, The Parable of the Sower for the end of their national tour. Soon after, he performed upstate for a production of The Sound of Music with the Mac-Haydn Theatre. Next, he went on tour with Wordless Music Orchestra accompanying Sigur Ros for their East coast portion of their United States and Canada tour. And finally, he performed with the same orchestra to accompany Ellie Goulding for two evenings at Kings Theatre in Brooklyn. Malachi consistently performs and collaborates with his colleagues, is a recording artist, and is currently a member and resident composer of the Dream Quartet. In addition to performing classical music, Malachi enjoys branching out into multiple genres, collaborating with dancers and singers, going as far as singing while playing the cello himself. Currently, he is on tour with Marvel’s Spiderman: Across the Spiderverse, Live in Concert.
Since 2020, Malachi has composed for five films, and has won multiple awards for And Don’t Forget I Love You which has premiered at five film festivals, taking home awards at three of them. Awards include: Official Selection at the Oxford Film Festival, Official Selection at the Indie Memphis Film Festival, and the Programmer’s Selection at the Huntington Beach Cultural Cinema Showcase, with a signed certificate of Top Choice Documentary Short by the Mayor of Huntington Beach. Malachi has composed for an animation that has been released earlier this year named The Candy Lady, which has currently been accepted into five film festivals so far, receiving its international debut in March of this year. In addition to composing and performing cello, Malachi also acts in theatre and film. He toured New York City and Chicago in a Berthold Brecht play and has a web series role for later this year. He has also discovered scriptwriting, leaning into his ability to tell a story, which is accompanying his blossoming skill in filmmaking. He currently resides in New York City.
