Biography

Luis Vargas served as the principal timpanist and percussionist for the Florida International University Symphonic Orchestra and FIU Wind Ensemble, positions he held from 2018 to 2023. He performs regularly with ensembles such as the Greater Miami Symphonic Band, Kendall Orchestra, and St. Phillips Episcopal Church Choir, in addition to theatrical productions with the Seminole Theatre Pit Players and Area Stage Theatre Company. His collaborative work includes performances with the Alhambra Orchestra, Miami Music Festival Opera Academy, and several other notable groups.

In his capacity as an educator, Vargas has contributed significantly to music education at various levels. His roles have included Director at Miami Coral Park Senior High School and Doral Academy Preparatory School, as well as Front Ensemble Instructor at Florida International University. He also teaches at the School of Rock, demonstrating his commitment to developing the skills of young musicians.

Born and raised in Miami, Florida, Vargas’s musical foundation was laid in his middle school band program. He pursued higher education at Florida International University, where he graduated with honors in Music Performance, studying under Dr. Karlyn Vina. He furthered his studies with a Master’s in Music Performance under Dr. Colin Williams. Vargas is currently enhancing his skills through study with Matthew Howard, Principal Percussionist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
