Nicolette Josanne Blount
Biography
Nicolette Blount is tribal member of the Chickasaw Nation, Dramatist Guild Foundation National Fellow, a mother, songwriter, librettist, singer, actress, author, and producer who has performed around the U.S.. In addition to being Chickasaw, she has Seminole and European ancestry. Nicolette is the creator, cowriter, composer and lyricist for Savage a musical based on her Chickasaw grandma, Wanda Savage, a starlet and single mother in the 1920s who faced misogyny, racism and abuse while trying to make a name for herself. Savage is a 2024 semifinalist for the NMTC O’Neil. Nicolette is the co writer of music, lyrics, and book for Red: The Queen of Hearts Story, Bad Girls of the Bible, and co writing the book and writing music and lyrics Riot Grrl: A Punk Anti Musical.
She is owner of Take My Shot Productions LLC and Underground Demos, a full service demo production business. Nicolette is passionate about supporting new works by underrepresented voices. She coproduced the Off Broadway show A Commercial Jingle for Regina Comet and is currently coproducing In Pieces by Joey Contreras. Nicolette is an investor for the Museum of Broadway in NYC and Millennials are Killing Musicals. She self produced and released an EP and singles for Savage the Musical that have garnered 426K streams to date. She triples 100% of the streaming profits and donates to Oklahoma Native Alliance Against Violence who works with her tribe as well as over 25+ tribes in OK.
As a songwriter, Nicolette’s music has been featured at 54 Below (Women of the Wings), Broadway Sessions, New York Musical Festival (2019, two concerts for Savage) and at the upcoming Ring of Keys Gala (Queering the Cannon of Alan Menken) premiering Palm Springs which she cowrote with Nico Juber at Joe’s Pub. She is a recipient of the Mass Cultural Council Grant (2023). Her show Savage received Honorable Mention for the American Playwrights Relentless Award (2022), earned 11 nominations and won several runners up in different categories in the 2022 Broadway World’s Regional Boston Awards including First Runner up for Best New Musical (non professional), and received First Runner Up in Open Jar Studio’s Broadway Shark Tank (2023). Although classically trained, she has fronted jazz bands and rock bands. Some of Nicolette’s performance highlights have been singing at Carnegie Hall and Performing in two operas, Tosca and Turandot with the Palm Springs and Riverside Civic Operas. Her favorite roles to date are Ms. Hannigan in Annie, Ms. Andrews in Mary Poppins, and Cinderella’s Stepmother in Into the Woods. While living in Hawaii, Nicolette wrote and recorded her first album, Conversations and toured with the Hawaiian group Kanikapila Singers. She started a Hawaiian nonprofit, Grace 4 U, through which she organized and produced an annual festival of local visual and performing artists.
Her current project, nativetheatreartists.com, is in development with hopes of giving more visibility to North American Native theatre artists on Broadway and Off Broadway in an industry where Natives are 1.5% of writers and 0% represented in all other creative areas (AAPAC Visibility Report 2018/2019).
Nicolette is a member of the Dramatist Guild, ASCAP, Beyond Music, Society of Composers and Lyricists, Songwriters Guild of America, Maestra, MUSE, RISE, and TRU. She has been featured in Native Max Magazine, DC Metro Arts, The Chickasaw Times, and other publications including podcasts.
