Andy Li

Biography

Andy Li is an Arizona-born Chinese American composer for theatre, opera, and media based in New York City. He is a winner of the 2025 GCNA Franco Proposal Contest, for which he wrote St Anne’s Garden in a Fading Summer.

His original musical The Garden Bridge (lib. Jill Ohayon) has been workshopped at The BringAbout with Jennifer Jancuska, Resident Choreographer of Hamilton on Broadway, and will be developed at the Casa Uno Residency in Costa Rica. It was a finalist for the Aubrey and Marla Dan Fund for New Musicals and the Lab Series at the Manhattan School of Music, and a semifinalist for the 2024 CreateTheater Musical Series. It was also selected for performance at New York City’s Breaking Sound Series and 54 Below. His musical Birthday Presence (lib. Jill Ohayon) was presented at Symphony Space by the Off-Broadway theatre company Prospect Musicals as part of the 2025 Musical Theatre Lab.

For opera, he has written Tesserae (lib. Patrick Thompson) and What Do You See? (lib. Sravya Saraswatula) for The American Opera Projects. For film, he has composed original scores for Pasta (dir. Janey Feingold), Blank Canvas (dir. Xuecong Zhao) and Her Summer (dir. Yunye Chen). He is the sound designer for the audio drama Intrusive Thot (written by Sarah Rossman), which had its pilot episode broadcast across Glasgow by RADIOPHRENIA.

Li holds an MFA from the Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program (NYU), a BM in Music for New Media: Film & Game Scoring (Peabody Institute), and BA degrees in French and Medicine, Science, and the Humanities (Johns Hopkins University). His composition teachers include Matthew Sklar (The Prom, Elf the Musical, The Wedding Singer), Thomas Dolby, Christopher Kennedy, Vid Smooke, Martyn Harry, and Travis Hardaway. He is a member of ASCAP, the Dramatists Guild, and MUSE.
