Biography

Averie Washington (they/them) is a classically trained flutist from New Jersey. They have a bachelor’s degree from Mount Holyoke College and a Master of Music in music education from William Paterson University. As part of their master’s degree, they researched and presented a lecture recital on the use of extended techniques in flute literature. They have studied with teachers such as Alison Hale and Karen Demsey and performed in masterclasses for flutists such as Nicholas Duchamp and Valerie Coleman. Recently they had the privilege of attending the Hidden Valley Music Seminar given by Keith Underwood and the Self-Sufficient Flutist masterclass given by Hadar Noiberg.

They have experience in a variety of chamber ensembles, including flute choirs, klezmer groups, and community orchestras. This has given Averie the opportunity to perform diverse genres of music. Most recently, they subbed with a local community orchestra for their winter pops concert. When performing as a soloist they enjoy modern and contemporary music as it allows them to push the flute to its limits. In addition to flute and piccolo, Washington also plays alto saxophone.

When not performing, Averie Washington teaches private music lessons on flute, clarinet, and saxophone. They enjoy helping musicians achieve their full potential. They can be found online through their website: awflute.com.
