Join us for a discussion with industry leaders and professionals as we discuss issues\, challenges and opportunities for change that impact the AAPI community. \nMeet our panelists: \nAMANDA MORTON is a Music Director based out of the NYC region. She sits on the Diversity\, Equity\, Inclusion & Access Committee of Maestra. She serves as Music Supervisor for adaptations of Diary of A Wimpy Kid and Anne of Green Gables. She is also the Associate Music Director/Lyric Dramaturg for KPOP: The Broadway Musical. Pre-pandemic\, she was the Music Director/Conductor/Keys 1 for the first national tour of Summer: The Donna Summer Musical. She has collaborated with Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival\, Lightning Rod Special\, Philadelphia Theatre Company\, Wilma Theater\, Ars Nova\, Pig Iron Theatre Company\, and Bearded Ladies Cabaret (among others). Amanda also served as the Director of Drama School at the Arden Theatre Company from the 2014 through 2016 season\, designing curriculum and professional development practices for teaching artists. At University of the Arts\, she taught a Music Skills course for Freshman musical theatre majors\, fostering development in music theory and musical theatre history. She has a B.F.A. in Musical Theatre Performance from Ithaca College. \nADAM GWON is a composer and lyricist whose musicals have been produced on six continents\, in more than half-a-dozen languages. Off-Broadway: Scotland\, PA (Roundabout Theatre – Drama Desk nomination\, NYT Critic’s Pick)\, Ordinary Days (Roundabout Theatre\, Keen Company revival – Drama League Award nomination)\, Old Jews Telling Jokes (Westside Theatre\, NYT Critic’s Pick); Regional: String (Village Theatre)\, Cake Off (Signature Theatre – Helen Hayes Award nomination\, Bucks County Playhouse)\, Cloudlands (South Coast Rep)\, The Boy Detective Fails (Signature Theatre)\, Bernice Bobs Her Hair (Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma); West End: Ordinary Days (Trafalgar Studios). DESCRIPTION:If you don’t know Linda Twine\, now is your chance! Meet this trailblazing Black artist who has built and shaped the musical theater landscape through her music direction of shows like Caroline or Change\, Jelly’s Last Jam\, and The Color Purple. Spend time with Ms. Twine in this candid interview that will be moderated by Founding Member Joseph Joubert. \nLINDA TWINE -The love for music and performing were always part of the Twine home. Linda Twine’s mother was an elementary school reading specialist who loved to organize classroom operettas complete with costumes\, choreography\, and rhythm bands. Her father was an attorney who loved to sing and played the family piano daily. Twine’s extraordinary musical talent was evident from a very young age\, and her parents began the training of that talent when she was a young girl. \nWhile teaching in New York City by day and accompanying classical and jazz artists at night\, Linda Twine got her break when she was asked to substitute on the keyboard for the Tony Award-winning hit\, “The Wiz” on Broadway. Today\, Twine is a renowned conductor and composer. In 2007 she was the music director of the hit Broadway musical “The Color Purple.” Her other Broadway credits include “Caroline or Change: A Year with Frog and Toad\,” “Jelly’s Last Jam\,” “Big River\,” “Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music\,” “Ain’t Misbehavin\,'” and “The Wiz.” Linda has composed and arranged theatrical works produced off-Broadway\, regionally and internationally. Her choral works have been released by major American music publishers. \nTwine has always been a dedicated educator and pursued her passion for education through her volunteer and extracurricular activities. \nJOSEPH JOUBERT – Joseph Joubert is a hugely versatile musician whose wide-ranging accomplishments and talent as a pianist\, arranger\, orchestrator\, Broadway conductor\, and music director have taken him around the world. Most recently Mr. Joubert was musical director and orchestrator for “Harriet Tubman” star Cynthia Erivo in three sold out Tokyo performances. Next season Mr. Joubert will be musical supervisor for “Blue” at the Apollo directed by Phylicia Rashad starring Lynn Whitfield and Leslie Ugams. Also next year Roundabout Theatre Company is presenting “Caroline\, or Change” using orchestrations by Mr. Joubert. Last summer Mr. Joubert was orchestrator with Danny Troob for Alan Menken’s “Hercules” presented by PublicWorks for Disney. Mr. Joubert was music supervisor and orchestrator for Classic Stage Company’s “Carmen Jones” starring Anika Noni Rose to rave reviews. His Broadway orchestration credits include: “The Color Purple”(Drama Desk Nomination)\, “Disaster”\, “Violet”(Drama Desk Nomination)\, “Leap of Faith”\, and “Caroline or Change”. He was Musical Director for Berry Gordy’s “Motown The Musical “and was assistant conductor for Nice Work If You Can Get It and Billy Elliot. Mr. Joubert was guest conductor of the New Jersey Symphony Christmas Concert featuring Take 6. \nMr. Joubert was Musical Director\, Arranger\, and Pianist for Norm Lewis’s American Songbook\, the PBS Live from Lincoln Center special. Mr. Joubert was orchestrator/musical supervisor and conductor for the PBS special “Three Mo’Tenors” and production of “Three Mo Divas”. Mr. Joubert was an orchestrator for the TV show “Smash” and the film “Night’s In Rodanthe”. He received a grammy nomination for Best Arrangement Acompanying A Vocal for the Broadway Inspirational Voices “Great Joy”. \nAs a record producer and arranger/orchestrator he has worked with Ashford and Simpson\, Diana Ross\, George Benson\, Patti LaBelle\, Whitney Houston\, Cissy Houston\, Jennifer Holliday\, Dionne Warwick\, Luther Vandross\, Norm Lewis and Diane Reeves. His orchestrations are used by symphonies across the USA including The New York Philharmonic and Philadelphia orchestras. \nHe appeared in the Metropolitan Opera’s revival of Porgy and Bess as the piano-player Jasbo Brown. Critics have hailed Mr. Joubert’s “sensitive and supportive” performances as an accompanist and the “uncommon tonal beauty” of his playing. He has collaborated with such classical singers as Denyce Graves\, Esther Hinds\, Harolyn Blackwell\, Florence Quivar\, Simon Estes\, and Hilda Harris\, and performed with Kathleen Battle at the White House for President Bill Clinton as well as Carnegie Hall. \nMr. Joubert is at home arranging and performing in any style from classical to pop\, gospel to Broadway\, spiritual to R & B. He has reinterpreted classic hymns on his solo piano CD Total Praise and most recent solo piano CD A Mighty Fortress Is Our God: The Joubert Experience released by GIA Publications. His published arrangements are performed all over the world. As Musical Director for Judy Collins for five years he performed with the London Symphony and many of the major American orchestras. \nBorn in New York City\, the son of a Baptist minister\, he began playing the piano at the age of eight and by age sixteen had made his Town Hall debut with full orchestra. He received his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from Manhattan School of Music\, where he studied with Dora Zaslavsky\, and won the nationwide piano competition of the National Association of Negro Musicians in 1980.

Meet this trailblazing Black artist who has built and shaped the musical theater landscape through his orchestrations of shows like Dreamgirls\, Hairspray\, and The Oscars. Spend time with Mr. Wheeler in this candid interview that will be moderated by Founding Member Kenny Seymour. \nHAROLD WHEELER – Producer and composer Harold Wheeler was born William Harold Wheeler\, Jr. on July 14\, 1943 in St. Louis\, Missouri to Roxetta McGee and William Harold Wheeler\, Sr. At Antioch Baptist Church\, where the members included Chuck Berry and Ike and Tina Turner\, Wheeler played the piano for Sunday school at age five. Wheeler attended Turner Branch Elementary School and graduated from Sumner High School in 1960. He then attended Howard University\, where he earned his B.A. degree in 1964. Wheeler earned his M.A. degree in music from Manhattan School of Music in 1968. \nFrom 1968 to 1971\, Wheeler worked as an assistant program director for CBS-FM Radio in New York. In 1971\, Wheeler left CBS in order to compose his own music and coach other performers. That same year\, composer Burt Bacharach hired Wheeler for his new musical Promises\, Promises\, making him the youngest conductor on Broadway. Wheeler was soon working with Michael Bennett composing dance music for A Chorus Line\, going on to work with Bennett on Dreamgirls\, Coco and SCANDAL. In 1971\, Wheeler worked as musical director for Melvin Van Peeble’s groundbreaking musical Ain’t Supposed to Die a Natural Death\, and for Don’t Play Us Cheap in 1972. From 1971 to 1979\, Wheeler composed jingles for Pepsi\, Coca-Cola\, TWA\, United Airlines\, McDonald’s and Folgers. Wheeler’s motion picture credits include: Straight Out of Brooklyn; Love! Valour! Compassion!; Spanish Judges; Cotton Comes to Harlem; Fortune and Men’s Eyes; Hercules; City Slickers; Keeping the Faith; and The Kid. Wheeler was arranger and/or music director for special events such as the 1995 and 1996 People’s Choice Awards; Motown 30 “What’s Goin On?”; the 1996 Olympics; the 1996 and 2000 Democratic National Conventions; 2002 American Film Institute Awards; and the 2003 Academy Awards. Throughout his career\, Wheeler arranged and produced for Debbie Allen\, Anita Baker\, Peabo Bryson\, Aretha Franklin\, Della Reese\, Nina Simone\, B.B. King\, Smokey Robinson\, Diana Ross\, Freda Payne\, Kathleen Battle\, Ray Charles\, Stevie Wonder\, Al Green\, Englebert Humperdinck\, Irene Cara\, Joe Cocker\, Dizzy Gillespie\, Gloria Gaynor\, Chita Rivera\, Whitney Houston\, and Stephanie Mills\, among scores of other performers. \nNominated for six Tony Awards for his work on the musicals\, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels\, Hairspray\, The Full Monty\, Swing!\, Little Me and The Life\, Wheeler won the Drama Desk Award for Hairspray for Best Orchestrations in 2003. \nKENNY SEYMOUR – Kenny Seymour has developed a reputation as a consummate professional for his creativity\, talent\, versatility\, exquisite musicianship\, and his ability to navigate a wide variety of musical styles and genres with authenticity and integrity. He has worked with many of Broadway’s top producers\, composers\, playwrights\, choreographers\, and directors\, a wide variety of artists in the recording industry\, as well as many up and coming directors of film and television. \nCurrently the music director/music supervisor and arranger of Tony Award Winning hit Broadway Musical Ain’t Too Proud: The Life & Times of the Temptations\, some of his other credits include: music director for the Tony Award winning Best Musical Memphis\, orchestrator for Broadway’s Amazing Grace\, music supervisor/arranger/orchestrator for MARLEY: A Premiere Musical\, music director/supervisor/orchestrator for Carnegie Hall’s A Time Like This: Music For Change\, as well as dance arranger/electronic music producer for Half-Time: The Musical\, music director/arranger/incidental music for The Tallest Tree In The Forest\, and music supervisor/orchestrator for Big Maybelle: Soul of the Blues. \nAs a composer Kenny has had his work performed by the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra\, received a Global Music Award for Best Original Score of the independent film Talking with the Taxman About Poetry and\, composed and orchestrated music for the popular international children’s language program English Egg. Kenny has arranged and orchestrated music for shows on Fox\, BET\, and NBC as well as the Inaugural Ball for President Barack Obama. He has performed on stages around the world\, from the legendary Apollo Theatre and Carnegie Hall\, to the Montreux Jazz Festival\, working with a wide variety of the industry’s top recording artists. \nKenny owes his start in the music industry to his late grandmother\, entertainer Wilhelmina C. Pappy\, his mother\, Broadway actress Mary Seymour of Hair (original Broadway cast) and Raisin: The Musical\, and his late father\, Kenny W. Seymour formerly of the music group Little Anthony and the Imperials. \nKenny attended Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art\, Manhattan School of Music\, and Berklee College of Music.

He is the Music Director for“Amateur Night at the Apollo” at the world famous Apollo Theater in the historic Harlem\, NY. Most recently Michael\, along with his wife\, Annastasia Victory were commissioned to be the arrangers\, orchestrators\, and music directors for a groundbreaking new musical – “A Wonderful Word: The Life and Music of Louis Armstrong.” The world premiere will be presented by Miami New Drama at the Colony Theater Fall 2021. \nMichael has made his mark in the Broadway world as an associate conductor on the smash hit show Motown: The Musical. He is the Associate Conductor for the highly anticipated Broadway show MJ: The Musical – a behind the scenes look at Michael Jackson’s 1992 Dangerous Tour. Some of his other Broadway credits include: The Color Purple\, Nice Work If You Can Get It\, Memphis\, Baby It’s You. Michael was a part of the music team for NBC’s award winning production of The Wiz Live! \nMichael completed 4 years as conductor/music director for the North American Tour of Jesus Christ Superstar\, starring Ted Neeley\, from the motion picture Jesus Christ Superstar.
